Gentle on the Land

We have followed our intuition and adapted to the environment instead of making it conform to our wants.  In doing so we have created a home that is low maintenance, provides us with "free heat" on sunny winter days and free "air-conditioning" in the summer. We have made all the mistakes in the book and freely share the knowledge we have gleaned through 40+ years of living gentle on this land.

Every structure and garden was created with thoughtfulness using the materials that we could afford and/or that were on hand. Our building and renovating will end with our tenure on this land! Life in the magical hundred acre woods is one of constant change, innovation  and adaptation, as we live with our environment in the gentlest of ways. Even the seasons bring changes as our house and gardens grow gently.

Together we have created a home that uses the best of modern technology in a simple, straight forward manner. I have an engineering background am ready to share freely my years of hands-on knowledge along with the resources we used to establish Rural Rootz.

I specialize in all things wood ...

Dee and I have built all the structures at Rural Rootz including our passive solar home. With my engineering background,
and life time of building skills,
I am able to help you avoid some of the pitfalls of "owner built" structures.

We began life here by being very conscious of the type of footprint we were making on this land.
Our deep connection with the environment, led us to finding technologically advanced ways
to ease our minds and spirits about the inevitable impact
humans have living
in the middle of a forest.

There are gentle ways to build
that make sense
and are cost effective.

I have worked as a "Specific" contractor along with Dee for more than 40 years. We have built complete homes, laid over 400 tons of local dolomitic limestone, designed and installed kitchens, and created a life
for ourselves without
having to go out and
"make a living"

Our conserver lifestyle is one of thoughtfulness using the best of what we can afford
to create our dream.
