The structures at Rural Rootz are unusual and interesting. The main dwelling is a passive solar home, that we began to build in 1975-76. Through the years it has undergone many changes, since it is a reflection of our life and needs. As technology changed, so did the house.
It is not a house to be simply lived in but needs to be interacted with. It makes us ever mindful of what is happening with the changing of the seasons, the days and even the hours of each day. It has many adaptive features which take advantage of the fact that our house is as organic as the land it sits on.
As part of the passive solar aspects, we have a magnificent view though three sections of windows which are each 10'X10'. They presented a problem of heat loss at night but Tom was able to overcome this problem with the invention of an electric blind system which creates a dead air space against the glass when they are lowered.
