'Carved in Stone'
The Legend of Willie

recorded by Dee Cherrie Ashman
Artwork by Gail Noonan

The intimate story of the original Wiarton Willie as told to Mother Nature Herself

Wiarton Willie came to light for his 40th anniversary of being the world’s most predictable weather prognosticator. This is the story of how he was able to communicate with the world of humans through Mother Nature. It begins with his trials and tribulations growing up in the burrow at Oliphant Ontario Canada. it follows him as he reaches maturity and comes to terms with being an albino groundhog in a world of plain dirt brown ground hogs. It continues on to the proud moment when the world’s largest Willie was carved out of stone and placed in the Blue Water Park at the entrance to the Colpoys Bay harbour in his honour of his accomplishments.

Bin There Done That
Dirty Little Garden Secrets

by Dee Cherrie Ashman

No soil!  No water!  No cleared spaces!  Mature Forest!  A wonderland of rocks!
What made me think … "I can garden here!"

Throughout our 33 years of working the land here at Rural Rootz, we have experimented with making soil and compost. We have followed the tried and true methods and we have tested the latest trends in gardening. Tom and I are not botanically trained but with my Dutch heritage and Tom’s inquisitive nature, it became a given that we would be drawn to unravelling the secrets of the earth on our hundred acre nature reserve.

In writing this book I have put down the steps we followed in producing a friable soil mix starting from a base of sand and manure. With the aid of archival pictures and drawings I have explained the methods that we have finally settled on as being the most effective for soil building, compost production and plant well being.
